De Hulk is located behind the ancient West Frisian Omringdijk, at the crossroads of the canals to Alkmaar and Amsterdam. A wetland and park-like area, in which trees, shrubs and grassland alternate. Part of the area is used for nature construction. Here you will find a variety of plant and animal species.
The Hulk is 58 hectares in size and consists of an inner and an outer dike area. You can go hiking, cycling, boating and fishing. There are nice playing fields for the children. There is a canoe transfer point at the pumping station at the bottom of the dike. Here you can transfer from the Markermeer to the inland waterway. The Hulk owes its name to the sign of the skipper's inn that stood here in the second half of the seventeenth century, with an image of a hulk, a large bulky freighter.
